Rather than relying on large-scale earthmoving equipment, small-scale miners work patiently to recover sapphire-bearing wash from underground deposits, using a practical combination of electric tools, manual labour and efficient processing equipment.
The work begins approximately 15 to 40 feet below the surface, where sapphire-bearing wash is carefully hand-dug on approved mining claims. These claims are strictly governed by the Queensland Government, helping ensure that mining activities are carried out safely, responsibly and with as little disturbance as possible. Keeping the operation tidy and controlled is an important part of the process, from the first excavation underground through to the final rehabilitation of the working area.
Working underground with care
Every part of the mining process is deliberate. An electric jackhammer helps break through harder ground, while picks and shovels are used to loosen and move the sapphire-bearing material. A wheelbarrow helps transport the material around the claim, and a generator-powered setup provides the electricity needed to operate the equipment.
This small-scale method allows miners to work selectively rather than disturbing large areas of ground. The material is removed in manageable amounts, giving the miner greater control over the excavation and helping keep the work area safe, organised and clean.
Bringing the wash to the surface
Once the sapphire-bearing wash has been loosened, it is brought to the surface using an electric Up & Over bucket. This system lifts the material out of the underground workings efficiently and reduces the need for heavy machinery at the claim.
At the surface, the wash is prepared for processing. It contains a mixture of clay, sand, gravel, larger rocks, ironstone and hopefully, sapphires.
Washing and separating the material
The first major stage of processing takes place in an electric trommel. As the wash moves through the rotating trommel, the trommel helps separate the finer sand from larger rocks and gravel. The screened material is then directed into the next stage of recovery. The pulsator!
The remaining screened wash passes through a pulsator, a six-tray jigging system designed to separate materials according to their natural weight. Sapphires are heavier than much of the surrounding sand and lighter waste material, so they settle down through the trays while the lighter material is carried away by the moving water.
This process leaves behind a heavy concentrate containing sapphires and ironstone. The concentrate must then be carefully checked, because the rough sapphires can be hidden among the darker stones. Sorting is a patient part of the work, requiring a good eye and an appreciation for the subtle colour and natural shape of each stone.
Recycling water throughout the process
Water is continuously recycled during processing. A de-watering system and settling tanks help recover and clarify the water so it can be used again, with only occasional top-ups required. This closed-loop approach keeps the operation cleaner and more efficient while reducing the amount of fresh water needed.
Recycling the water also helps keep the processing area controlled. Sand and sediment can settle in the tanks instead of being carried beyond the working area, supporting tidy and responsible mining practices.
From mine to market
What makes this approach special is the combination of traditional hands-on work and carefully selected electric equipment. Each stage, from underground digging and lifting the wash to trommel screening, jigging and hand sorting, is connected to the next.
